The problem is not limited to adults. "41 million under 5 children are overweight and obese, while 340 million are overweight and obese out of 5 - 19 children and adolescents", WHO report says.

A latest review published in 2018 February, had revealed a biochemical pathway that can be possibly accounted for the infamous link. Trevor W. Stone, the lead author of review, says "Activation of chronic inflammatory pathways, specially kynurenine pathway affects feeding, metabolism and promotion of carcinogenesis". Endogenous, environmental and dietary serine proteases deplete tumor suppressor cells, contributing for the imbalance further.
