A YOUNG WOMAN WITH MSG SENSITIVITY

Recently, a 20 year old women with no significant medical history, was presented with vomiting, dizziness, body weakness and butterflies in abdomen, 1 hour following ingestion of instant noodles - a typical case of food allergy. She usually does not eat instant noodles and the patient gave a history of two similar episodes - one after instant noodles consumption and other after eating a chicken koththu. Her pulse rate was 84 bpm, Blood Pressure 110/80 mmHg.

Although, we don't have any laboratory method to confirm MSG sensitivity, history above is more than enough. And note that she developed symptoms after 1 hour, NOT within 30 minutes in the way FDA had defined "Chinese Restaurant Syndrome" (CRS).

What I need to point out is that CRS is often overlooked by patients as well as by medical practitioners. A simple advice to avoid MSG containing foods would be helpful, because sometimes food allergies lead to anaphylactic reactions which is characterized by chest pain, rapid and abnormal heartbeat, difficulty in breathing, swelling of face and throat.
